I am God Almighty
"Abram was ninety-nine years old, and the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, 'I am God Almighty; walk before Me and be blameless.'"
(Genesis 17:1)
One of God's most famous attributes is omnipotence. After all, if one believes that God exists, it is logical to assume that He must be omnipotent. But what does that mean? Can God really do everything, or does He have some limitations?
One of the most famous philosophical questions that people often ask is:
"Can God create a rock that He cannot lift?"
This question seems like a trap: if God cannot create such a stone, then He is not omnipotent, and if He can but is unable to lift it, then He is not omnipotent.
The problem is that we misunderstand the term "omnipotent" when we ask this question. In fact, God is limited by His nature and can only do what does not contradict it.
It is more correct to say that God's omnipotence means that He has absolute power and is able to do anything that is consistent with His nature.
Thus, to the question above, the answer would be, "No, God cannot create such a stone," just as He cannot sin, for that would be contrary to His holy nature.
How can God's omnipotence help me?
You may have asked yourself this question more than once. It is very important to know correct theology, but it is even more important to understand how it helps in our daily lives.
1. We can cast our cares on God
We can be confident that He is able to help us. There is nothing in this world that is beyond His control.
"Cast your cares upon the Lord, and He will sustain you. Never will He let a righteous man be shaken."
(Psalms 54:23)
2. Humility before God's will
Realizing that God is in control of our lives and the entire universe teaches us humility. Not only can we trust Him, but we can humbly bring our desires to Him, accepting whatever answer we want because He knows what is best for us.
"Many are the designs of a man's heart, but only what is determined by the Lord will take place."
(Proverbs 19:21)
3. Assurance of victory over sin
We can be confident that God has conquered death and destroyed all our sins. He gives us the strength to fight against and overcome sin.
"What shall we say to this? If God is for us, who is against us?"
(Romans 8:31)
